Lilis Personal View of Karate.
Part of GRADING paperwork for junior Black Belts outlining their qualities and the benefits of practising karate over the years.
Why should Sensei grade me to 1st Dan?
I think sensei should grade me to a black belt because:
I have been doing Karate for nearly 6 years. I have a passion for Karate and I usually try my best. I always try to do what sensei tells me to do with general training, kata and kumite.
If I pass my black belt I am not going to stop practicing karate like some others do.
I will try my hardest to continue and to get to the highest Dan I can in the future.
I find that Karate is something that I really enjoy. I have tried other things (activities) but Karate was the only one I really enjoyed. I feel that I'm ready to take all the responsibilities that being a black belt comes with.
How does Karate benefit me?
Karate benefits me in lots of ways.
For instance if someone grabs hold of me I have a better chance of getting away and defending myself than a person who doesn't do a Karate (martial art).
Karate also helps to keep me mentally and physically strong.
It disciplines me
It teaches me lots of things that I didn't know
It's enjoyable
It boosts my confidence
It builds my stamina
It teaches me to be patient
To be respectful
It makes me more alert and helps with self awareness
It helps me with overcoming my fears
It helps with how focused I am at everything
It also teaches me what to do and what not to do
It speeds up my reflexes and it also teaches me that if not everything goes the way I want it to go - to be patient and to feel-down and give up.
For instance if I fail my graduation this time or if it does not go as I planned I will not get upset. Instead I will look at my mistakes and work hard to improve for the next time.
I believe giving up is not an option in karate. But preparation, acceptance and adjustment is part of learning karate.
