Answers to common questions from new students at Shotokan Fitness Karate School, London**

🥇 GENERAL Q&A

What can I wear for my first trial class?
You can attend in comfortable **sports clothing**.
Remember — this is a Karate class, not a beach run, so dress appropriately.

Why do we pay for trial classes?
We charge to help avoid overcrowding and to ensure each student gets proper attention.
There’s **already a free class included each week**, so you’ll still benefit.

From experience, those serious about learning Karate never mind the small trial fee.

Can I book in advance?
Trial classes can only be booked **within the same week**.
For adults, classes operate on a **Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG)** basis.

If I can’t make it, can I use the fee another time?
Sorry — **no.**
When you book, we reserve that spot just for you.

Can I book again?
Yes, of course — **anytime**, depending on availability.

Can I come just to watch a class?
**No**, for health and safety reasons.
Also, watching is never the same as doing — those who join in learn, those who watch rarely do.
Check out our **social media channels** for class clips instead!

Is one week enough to decide if I like Karate?
Not really.
The first week can go either way — good or bad.
It usually takes **at least six months** to truly understand if Karate is right for you.

🧑‍🎓 ADULT CLASSES Q&A

I’m a beginner — is Karate suitable for me?
Absolutely yes.

Is Karate just for kids?
No — **Karate was developed for adults** as a method of self-defense.
Today, many children train too, but it’s still just as valuable for adults.
---
Am I too old to start Karate?
Never!
We have students from **5 years old to over 60** training together at our dojo.

I have no martial arts experience — is that okay?
Perfectly fine.
In fact, starting fresh can be an advantage — you’ll learn properly from day one.

I may not be as fast or flexible as others.
That’s okay.
We repeat and demonstrate techniques at **different speeds** so everyone can progress at their own pace.

Does Karate require commitment?
Yes — Karate isn’t something to do “now and then.”
It’s a **discipline and way of life**, where progress comes through steady effort.
No shortcuts — but you’ll grow a lot through the journey.

I’m already experienced — will classes still suit me?
Yes.
We adjust training to each student’s **level and goals**, so you’ll always have something to develop.

🥋 SELF-DEFENSE  Q & A

Is Karate good for self-defense?
Definitely.
Karate teaches both physical defense and **mental awareness** — the most important kind of defense.

How long until I can defend myself?
That depends on you.
Like learning to walk, everyone progresses differently — the more you train, the faster you’ll improve.

Can I get fit by practicing Karate?
Yes.
Karate is a **full-body workout** — strength, coordination, and stamina all improve with consistent training.

⚠️ SAFETY Q&A

Is Karate safe?
Yes, as long as you train responsibly.
Like any sport involving movement, there’s always a small level of risk — but safety is always our priority.

I have a medical condition — can I still join?
It depends on your condition.
Karate can be physically intense, so it’s important to **consult your doctor first** to make sure it’s safe for you and others.
