(SHOTOKAN)

Haito- uchi —  Ridge- (hand) strike
Haito- uke —  Ridge- (hand) block

The term Haitō ( Japanese: 背刀, English: sword sword back ) refers to the radial (thumb-facing) edge of the hand.

The target area is the metacarpal bone of the index finger, with the four fingers extended and the first joint of the thumb bent and pressed against the side of the palm.

Haitō is used for both defensive techniques ( Uke waza ) and striking techniques ( Uchi waza ), for example to the temple, chin, back of the head, throat, face and stomach.
