DISCOVERY
OF
THE
ZENKUTSU DACHI
POSITION

Forward stance , often used in attack, is a basic stance in Shotokan style. The front leg is bent while the back leg is extended . The lateral spacing between the two feet is generally hip-width apart when starting out. However, this characteristic can vary, depending on the level of the practitioner, up to aligning the two feet.

DECOMPOSITION

AND

DISCOVERY OF THE

ZENKUTSU DACHI

POSITION

To position yourself in Zenkutsu Dachi, proceed as follows:

Place yourself in Zenkutsu Dachi:
From the Hachiji Dachi position, place your left foot in front of you , toes pointing forward.

Place the front knee above the front foot ; the knee must come above the toes of the front foot, keep the front knee open on the outside (it will naturally tend to come to rest on the inside)

Your back leg is stretched out , the tip of your back foot pointing forward , your back foot should be at a 45° angle.

Your back is vertical and not aligned with your back leg. Gaze straight ahead, chin parallel to the floor.

Your stance width is usually your pelvic width.

The body weight is distributed approximately 70% on the front leg , the body weight is on the front part of the feet but the heels must remain glued to the ground.

Take one step forward in Zenkutsu Dachi:
From the Zenkutsu Dachi position left leg forward.

Step 1 - Place all your body weight on your front leg , keeping your back straight and your spine vertical.

Step 2 - Move your back foot forward and place your front foot in front to find yourself in Neko Ashi Dahi position , this is an intermediate position in your movement.

Step 3 - Step your right foot forward to return to the Zenkutsu Dachi position.

To move forward one step in Zenkutsu Dachi position, chain the 3 steps in a fluid and continuous movement ; Body weight on the front leg, Neko Ashi Dachi, move the foot forward to resume the Zenkutsu Dachi position.

THE DEFECTS:

Beginner's fault: The most common fault encountered when starting out is having both feet on the same line , so you have no stability. When you move forward or backward a step, before placing your foot to finalize your movement, remember to place your foot outwards while respecting the width of the position which must be equal to the width of your pelvis .

Poorly positioned front knee: Your front knee is behind your front knee , so your front leg support is not strong. Correct this defect by placing your front knee above your front foot each time .

Fixed Front Knee: When performing a defensive or attacking technique with a hip movement, we often see the front knee move from left to right . Remember to keep your front knee fixed above the front foot , regardless of the technique or hip movement.
