INTRO

First Basics are the initial steps taught to first-grade students at our dojo. They are designed to build a strong foundation and help students become familiar with essential elements such as stances, punches, blocks, kicks, and more.

The better you understand and perform these basics, the greater your chances of improving as your training progresses. Think of them as the first layer upon which everything else will be built—so pay close attention and give your best effort from the start.

KICKS — GERI

Sure! Here's a clearer and more logically sequenced explanation of techniques 7, 8, and 9 — written in a style that mirrors martial arts class instruction or grading notes:

7. Using the front leg — turn into front stance (Zenkutsu Dachi) with hands in ready position. Then follow on:

➡️  Mae Geri – Zenkutsu Dachi

(Front kick – Front stance)

From your starting position, step forward with your *front leg*, turning into a **Zenkutsu Dachi** (front stance), with both hands in **ready position** (Yoi).

* Then perform a **Mae Geri** (front kick) with your **rear leg**.

* After the kick, place the kicking leg down **in front**, returning to a strong **Zenkutsu Dachi**.

✅ **Key points:**

* Kick snaps out and back quickly.

* Keep your guard up.

* Hips and shoulders square.

* Finish in a deep, balanced stance.

 8. Using the back leg — turn into front stance (Zenkutsu Dachi) with hands in ready position. Then follow on:

➡️ Mawashi Geri – Zenkutsu Dachi

(Roundhouse kick – Front stance)

* From your starting position, turn by stepping through with your **back leg** into a **Zenkutsu Dachi**, hands in **ready position**.

* Then perform a **Mawashi Geri** (roundhouse kick) with the **rear leg**.

* After the kick, place the kicking leg down in **Zenkutsu Dachi**, facing forward.

✅ **Key points:**

* Pivot on the supporting foot.

* Rotate hips for full impact.

* Guard up throughout.

* Land with control in front stance.

---

9. Using the back leg — turn into horse riding stance (Kiba Dachi) with hands in ready position. Then follow on:

➡️ Kosa Dachi → Yoko Geri → Kiba Dachi

(X-stance → Side kick → Horse stance)

* From your position, **turn using the back leg** into **Kiba Dachi** (horse riding stance), hands in **ready position**.

* Step across into **Kosa Dachi** (cross stance/X-stance).

* From here, perform a **Yoko Geri** (side kick) with the **front leg**.

* Retract the kick and land back into **Kiba Dachi** facing forward.

✅ **Key points:**

* Maintain low stances and core control.

* Sharp, clean transitions.

* Strong chamber and retraction on the side kick.

* Guard stays up throughout.

---

➡️ Repeat steps 7, 8, and 9 two more times in the same order.

🔁 COMBO REPEAT

Repeat steps 1–6 forward and backward, and add an extra Oi Zuki (lunge punch) at the end.

Don’t worry too much about your stance during this repeat — just focus on fluency and real-life application.

🧘‍♂️ Finish

Return to Shizentai, then to Heisoku Dachi or Musubi Dachi, and bow (rei) to end the session.

📌 Key Notes

  • All basics are repeated 3 times.

  • Finish each technique with hands in front — freestyle guard or Morote Uke (augmented block).

  • Apply KIAI on the last move of each sequence — bring speed, power, and precision.

📖 Terminology

  • Heisoku Dachi – Attention stance, feet together

  • Musubi Dachi – Formal stance, heels together, toes apart

  • Shizentai – Natural stance

  • Hidari – Left

💭 Training Philosophy

*Kihon* (basics) sets 1, 2, and 3 are designed to support *all* students—both those who progress quickly and those who may need more guidance to get started.

Rather than introducing new techniques at each grade level (which can lead to confusion), we’ve created extended versions of the Kihons. Students are encouraged to learn and perform the full set of Kihons starting from their first grade.

However, students who are not yet able to perform the full set may complete a satisfactory portion, provided they show consistent improvement at each grade level. By the final grade associated with each Kihon set, students are expected to demonstrate complete proficiency.

By that time, we believe every student will have had the opportunity—and the time—to learn the Kihons properly, without excuses.

Practice with care
