Important Self Defense To Remember

Image
This article is about karate but not limited to. Check it out.   Important points to remember to better defend ourselves.  Do's and Don'ts 1.  Your best weapons are your judgment, reasoning, awareness of your surroundings, and your common sense. 2.   Always be aware of, and alert in your surroundings, particularly when you are at a disadvantage (unfamiliar neighbourhoods, strangers or even acquaintances, being alone anywhere).  3.   Do not get into situations or circumstances that are potentially dangerous or threatening to your well-being. 4.  If you can run or escape—do it! Avoid confrontation wherever possible—you might lose. 5.  Try to talk your way out of any confrontation if fleeing is not possible. Trying to talk your way out may stall your attacker long enough for you to get the advantage. 6.  If possible, do not let anyone get a hold of you. If it does happen, you must defend yourself immediately. 7.   Do not think about your defence too long – react, or it may be

Is Shotokan Karate good for self-defense?

Image
The root of Shotokan Karate and the taught techniques suggest that you will learn to defend yourself effectively. But the application of a Karate technique under training conditions or competition is significantly different from the constraints of a self-defense situation. Shotokan Karate is sufficient for self-defense. Its training system teaches more as pure self-defense but requires a little more time until you can vigorously develop your full defensive skills.  However, to acquire self-defense, karate techniques must be learned.  It is not appropriate to rehearse a rich fund of methods or very flexible handling of case situations; it is more important to use the technique very strongly, keep the correct distance, and be targeted. You can use different bunkai, randori, and Kumite situations as self-defense exercises. What is Shotokan Karate? Shotokan Karate is an empty-handed martial art rooted in the fundamental techniques of punching, striking, kicking, and blocking. Yet, there is

Lilis  Personal View of Karate.  Part of GRADING paperwork for junior Black Belts outlining their qualities and the benefits of practising karate over the years. Why should Sensei grade me to 1st Dan? I think sensei should grade me to a black belt because: I have been doing Karate for nearly 6 years. I have a passion for Karate and I usually try my best. I always try to do what sensei tells me to do with general training, kata and kumite.   If I pass my black belt I am not going to stop practicing karate like some others do. I will try my hardest to continue and to get to the highest Dan I can in the future.  I find that Karate is something that I really enjoy. I have tried other things (activities) but Karate was the only one I really enjoyed. I feel that I'm ready to take all the responsibilities that being a black belt comes with. How does Karate benefit me? Karate benefits me in lots of ways.  For instance if someone grabs hold of me I have a better chance of gettin

Dear parents/students, If you/ your child is not feeling well do not attend the classes - and if in doubt about Covid-19 please take a test.  Example.  If your child is sick on Saturday -- try not to attend the Sunday class. Missing a few classes nothing will happen -- but this way you may just help someone you are training every day from getting infected / SICK.  (Just keep in mind  that if you already had Covid-19 and it was easy for you -- for your friends may no be the same). - How to test yourselves - check out the link.  - https://youtu.be/zCqo7MhQT6U - Covid-19 symptoms. - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/main-symptoms/#symptoms - Covid-19 symptoms may vary from person to person especially in children.   If in doubt, it is always best to test yourself.  - - Thank you to those of you who communicate with me on a regular basis.  Much appreciated.  Thanks!  Ylli Sensei www.mykarateclub.co.uk

JION

Image
JION - (Temple Bells) A little bit of let's say history of thi great Shotokan Katate Kata.  There is a belief that this KATA was of Chinese origin because of the word JION, a bouddhist term found in the ancient books of China. Moreover the origin may be in the temple of JION where martial arts were practiced. Afterwards, it reached TOMARI. The movements in this KATA hide a strong fighting spirit. This KATA is actually practiced in SHOTOKAN and WADO RYU only. Not very difficult to perform, mastery of the HEIAN KATA will help in its study and perfection. A representative KATA in SHOTOKAN with basic stances: KIBA-DACHI, ZENKUTSU-DACHI and KOKUTSU-DACHI, the last movement is performed by using the opponent's strength grabbing the wrist and counter-attacking to the ribs simultaneously.  A compulsory KATA in the Federation of All Japan Karate Do Organizations, I recommend its practice.
